Introducing...CAPITALS: Celebrating 30 Years in the Graffiti World

I owe much of what I do and where I am as an artist to the year 1992, when I became a graffiti artist and began painting letters on walls. Coming up with interesting ways to write these six letters became an art school of sorts and the friends and people I painted with were like my teachers and fellow students. The alleyways, freeways and underpasses were all my classrooms. 2022, marks my 30th year of being a graffiti artist and to honor the path it sent me down, I wanted to paint these six letters once again.

Hi Greg, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an artist creating paintings for various museums, galleries, private commissions and licensing projects around the world. The name “Craola” is my graffiti name which I took on in 1992 when I began my journey. I later transitioned what I was learning on walls and from crew members onto canvases with acrylic paint and slipped nicely into the “Pop-Surrealism” movement. I have worked in the streetwear, fashion industry as well as in video games for Treyarch/Activision on such titles as Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2x and a variety of the Spiderman video games.

Birds have always lead the way into and out of "The Outside". They hold the keys, yet at the same time are the lock and are very selective of who gets to enter into this whimsical world. Soaring high above us they are able to select the very special few from a vantage point many of us couldn't possibly grasp. I have always found birds fascinating, which is why they are heavily featured in my work. “Turn Key: One” and “Turn Key: Two” complement each other in this diptych as “birds of a feather”.
